To find out how a space invader game works - investigating its algorithms

 Learning Objectives:

To play a computer game and identify what happens

To understand the effects of computer games

 Success Criteria:

I can work out what some of the algorithm does and I can change parts to make the game different

I am aware of PEGI restrictions and the effects of excessive computer game playing/ TV watching.

All children should be able to:

1 – Open the Sencolewis.co.uk website

2  - Play the Scratch Space Invaders game

Most Children should be able to:

Complete 1 - 3

4 - Examine the code and predict the what types of algorthm are needed to make the parts work

5 – Have an understanding of PEGI age restrictions & the reasoning behind them

Some Children should be able to: (Greater Depth activities)

Complete 1 - 5

6 – Explain the effects of excessive computer game playing on their health and behaviour

7 - Change the code to adapt it into their own version of a computer game

Teacher Notes:

Have you noticed how many computer games involve shooting things?

Space Invaders was an early example, but there are many more recent examples. Do any of you play this sort of game?

Many people are concerned that violent games make their players more violent in the real world.  What do you think?

Do they know about the PEGI age restrictions on video games? Why do they think these exist?

How do you feel about waiting until you are older to play some games?

What would you do if they found something in a game that concerned you?

Show pupils the Space Invaders Scratch game.   C to work out how to change direction and how to fire.   Can the high score be reset?

Ask ch to play the game.   How have the algorithms been programmed?

In whole class discussion, make and test predictions about the algorithms needed.  Can they work out how the gun moves? Arrow flies? Scoring system? What is the red invader for?  When the invaders are hit?

How can the game be improved?
